Videos posted on social media showed people exiting the mall and others sheltering in stores.
Derek Smart, a video game designer who works nearby the mall, posted a video of several people trying to crouch behind cover.
“I can’t even begin to describe the chaos,” Smart wrote on Twitter. “It’s the most heartbreaking thing I have ever witnessed. Moms, kids, yelling & screaming, falling, tripping, kids – lost in the fray – amid the chaos and running around blindly in search of their parents.”
Bentolila said there are no ongoing threats at the mall, which is currently closed.
