Indianapolis police officer shot, wounded on city’s northeast side: reports

An us-regions police officer was hospitalized in stable condition Wednesday night after being crime” target=”_blank”>shot< on whether any suspects had been taken into custody.

Police had been called to the scene shortly before 9 p.m. on a report of a domestic disturbance, FOX 59 of Indianapolis reported. When they arrived, a suspect fired at them, striking one of the officers in a leg, according to the station.

Police later found three people suffering from gunshot wounds, with a girl and a woman both hospitalized in critical condition, FOX 59 reported. The third wounded person was believed to be the gunman, who later died at a hospital.

Police believe the gunman’s wounds were self-inflicted, FOX 59 reported.

No police officers fired any shots during the incident, authorities told FOX 59.

Three other children were found in the apartment and were being cared for by Indianapolis police, according to the station. Their relationship to the suspect was unclear, the Indianapolis Star reported.

Numerous law enforcement vehicles were seen in the area soon after the shooting as an investigation got underway.

Drivers were being asked to avoid the area around Bayview Club Drive as the investigation continued, the Star reported.

The wounded officer was awake and breathing when other officers arrived at the scene, FOX 59 of Indianapolis reported.

In a Twitter post, police said they did not believe community members faced any ongoing threat following the shooting.

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett issued the following statement, according to FOX 59:

“I am grateful to hear that the officer injured in tonight’s incident is in stable condition. My thoughts are with the officer and their family, as well as all of the brave IMPD officers who routinely go into harm’s way to keep our community safe. We must do everything we can to stop the scourge of gun violence, deploying resources and uniting neighbors to halt this vicious cycle.”

The neighborhood where the officer was shot has seen five homicides so far this year, including four by gunfire, according to FOX 59.
